Fractional Skin Resurfacing

What is Fractional Skin Resurfacing?

Fractional skin resurfacing (FRAXEL) is a non-invasive laser treatment that targets a fraction of the skin at a time. By penetrating the skin’s surface, it stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, improving texture, tone, and overall skin quality.

What does Fraxel do and what can it do for my skin?

Fractional lasers smooth wrinkles and scars, fade brown spots and hyperpigmentation, and improve overall skin tone. As one of the more aggressive lasers available, it effectively treats pitted or indented acne scars, including ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars.

The laser creates tiny “microthermal zones” deep within the skin—like pixels—that the body naturally repairs by replacing damaged tissue with new, healthy skin. Each treatment rejuvenates approximately 15–20% of sun-damaged, scarred, or wrinkled skin, gradually revealing smoother, more even skin.

What should I expect and how should I care for my skin after a Fraxel treatment?

The Day Of:
Your skin may feel sensitive, warm, and slightly swollen—this is normal. To stay comfortable:

  • Prop yourself up with pillows if lying down to reduce swelling.

  • Apply ice packs in 15–20 minute intervals.

  • Avoid sun exposure; wear a hat and protect treated skin.

  • Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

  • Skip harsh cleansers; use a gentle moisturizer, preferably chilled. We recommend our Stem Cell Repair Serum and/or Retinol for faster healing.

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine.

The Week Of:
Expect dryness, tightness, itchiness, small bumps, discoloration, swelling, and peeling. To care for your skin:

  • Do not pick or peel—this can cause scarring.

  • Cleanse gently with warm water and a mild cleanser, such as our Honey & Coconut Milk Cleanser.

  • Keep skin moisturized.

  • Shave or tweeze gently if needed; avoid waxing or chemical hair removers like Veet or Nair.

  • Continue using sunscreen.

  • Over-the-counter medications may help with swelling.

  • Be patient—your skin is healing and will gradually slough away damaged layers.

One Week Later:
Your skin should be returning to normal. You may begin resuming your usual skincare routine if there’s no irritation. If irritation persists, wait a few more days.

Two Weeks Later:
Peeling and sensitivity should be gone. Your skin should feel smooth, refreshed, and glowing. Continue daily sunscreen use, and contact our office if any issues remain.

Enjoy your glowing skin!

What is the recovery time like after a Fraxel treatment?

Fraxel typically requires 4–5 days of downtime. During this period, pigment may rise to the skin’s surface, often dryness, flaking, and itching are common.

What precautions should I take after my treatment?

Aftercare: What NOT to Do

  • Avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

  • Do not pick at bumps or peel flaking skin, as this can cause permanent scarring.

  • Cleanse gently with warm water; avoid harsh or exfoliating cleansers.

What is the difference between Co2 laser treatment and Fraxel?
  • Fractional Laser: Treats only a portion of the skin at a time, allowing for faster healing and targeted results.

  • CO₂ Laser: Treats the entire skin surface, providing more dramatic results but with longer recovery time.
